You're twenty minutes into a perfect pomodoro. Your brain is finally in the zone. Then your phone buzzes. Or a coworker taps your shoulder. Or you remember you never replied to your mom's text. And just like that, the focus is gone.
Interruptions are the biggest reason people quit the Pomodoro Technique. But they don't have to be. Here's how to handle interruptions during a Pomodoro without breaking the system.
Two Types of Interruptions
Every interruption is either internal (from your own brain) or external (from the outside world). They need different strategies.
Handling Internal Interruptions
Internal interruptions look like this: "I should check if that email arrived." "Wait, I need to remember to buy milk." "Actually, I wonder what the weather is tomorrow."
The fix is simple: write it down, don't act on it.
Keep a piece of paper next to you. When a thought pops up, write one line and keep working. During your break, look at the list. Most items aren't urgent. The ones that are, handle in the break.
You'll be shocked how many thoughts evaporate once they're on paper. The brain lets go of things it doesn't have to hold.
Handling External Interruptions
External interruptions come in three flavors: digital, human, and environmental.
Digital Interruptions
- Phone: Turn off notifications. Better yet, put it in another room.
- Computer: Close Slack, email, and any other messaging app. Log out if you have to.
- Watch: If you wear a smartwatch, use "do not disturb" or take it off.
Human Interruptions
- Tell people your schedule. "I focus from 9 to 11 with short breaks. I'll be free after 11."
- Use headphones. Even without music, headphones signal "busy."
- Set expectations. "Can we talk in 15 minutes? I'm in the middle of something."
Environmental Interruptions
- Noise: Use earplugs or white noise.
- Visual clutter: Clear your desk before you start.
- Temperature: Fix it before you sit down. Don't get up mid-pomodoro to adjust the AC.
The Rule of Unavoidable Interruptions
Sometimes interruptions are genuinely unavoidable. Baby wakes up. Boss calls. Power goes out. In that case, the pomodoro is dead. That's fine. Mark it as interrupted and start a new one when you can.
Don't try to "save" a broken pomodoro. It doesn't work.
The Interruption Log
Keep a tally of every interruption during the day. At the end, count them. This is the most eye-opening data you'll ever collect. Most people discover that interruptions are not random โ the same three things break their focus every single day. Fix those three and your productivity doubles.
Protect the Pomodoro
The Pomodoro Technique works because it's a promise: for 25 minutes, nothing else matters. Every interruption breaks that promise. Your job โ during the workday โ is to keep it.
Pomodoro Timer Plantask has a built-in "focus mode" that silences your phone during a session so you don't have to remember to.
